DESCRIPTION
It is a ferroalloy composed of iron and silicon with a content that varies between 40 and 80%, being this content the one that defines the quality of the product.
Ferro-silicon is obtained by reducing silica with coking coal in the presence of iron ore in blast furnaces for contents up to 15% silicon or in electric arc furnaces for higher contents.
The world's largest producer is China, followed at a great distance by Norway and Russia, as Chinese production is greater than that of the rest of the world combined.
PROPERTIES
It is stable and only attackable by nitric and hydrofluoric acids when in powder form. In contact with moisture or water, it can release hydrogen and may form flammable or explosive mixtures with air. Impurities can also produce arsine and phosphine, toxic gases that are released in such proportions that, under conditions of mechanical ventilation, the risk of poisoning clearly predominates over that of explosion.
Ferro Silicon is not classified as a hazardous preparation according to the relevant European regulations. For silicon content between 30 and 90% is classified as dangerous goods for transport, Class 4.3 (ADR) for road transport and category A for shipping (UN No: 1408)
USES
The uses of Ferro Silicon include:
- Deoxidizer in the manufacture of both construction and stainless steels to avoid excessive decarburization.
- Graphite for the manufacture of grey castings.
- As a vehicle for the addition of Silicon as an alloying element improving the behaviour of the alloy against corrosion and high temperatures.
- Base for the manufacture of Ferro Silicon Magnesium.
- For the production of Magnesium through the Pigdeon process from dolomite
- For the production of special steels from special low Al grades, etc..
